Introduction to Nanotechnology

Its the field of applied science whose theme is the control of matter on an atomic and moleculer scale. Nanotechnology is the manipulation of matter at the nanometer scale to create novel structures, devices and systems.

How Small is a nm?

One nanometer (nm) is one billionth of a meter. One human hair (cross section) is about 100,000 nonometers. Larger then nanoscale is the microscale & smaller than that is the atomic scale.

The next Big Thing is very, very, very small!

Nanotechnology is an enabling technology that will change the nature of almost every human made object in the next century. This means anything manufactured will be impacted by nanotechnology and it is happening more quickly than most people might think..!!

Is Nanotechnology feasible at all?

Nanotechnology is feasible and is the technology of the coming era, in which we shall see the decline of silicon supremacy. Natural biological system offers the best current proof that molecular machines are possible, and are capable of doing productive work.

Is nanotechnology bad or good?

Nanotechnology offers great potential for benefit to humankind, and also brings severe dangers. While it is appropriate to examine carefully the risks and possible toxicity of nanoparticles and other products of nanoscale technology, the greatest hazards are posed by malicious or unwise use of molecular manufacturing.

Dual-Use Technology
As a general-purpose technology, it eill be dualuse, means it will have many commercial uses and it also will have many military usesmaking far more powerful weapons and tools of surveillance. Thus it represents not only wonderful benefits for humanity, but also grave risks.

What could Nanofactory make?

Lifesaving medical robots and untraceable weapons of mass destruction. Networked computers for everyone in the world and networked cameras so governments can watch our every move. Trillions of dollars of abundance and vicious scramble to own everything. Rapid invention of wondrous products and weapons development fast enough to destabilize any arms race.

Terrorism-A threat

Surveillance

Disadvantages

Global monetary crisis, oil becomes worthless & diamonds becomes worthless. Atomic weapons more destructive and accessible increases causes of death. It is so minute that its existence in the hand is much unnoticed.

Possibilities to overcome.

The medical advantages are change of body appearance, stop aging process, imortality, painless childbirth and universal immunity like AIDS,flu and end of sickness. The social advantage include reproducing extinct animals & plants, safe & space travel, higher education, molecular food synthesis, to mention a few. The industrial advantages are automatic pollution cleanup, expanding computer technology by making it faster and smaller in size increasing employement.

Future Scope.

Future computers will use atoms instead of chips for memory. It can take Artificial Intelligence to new heights. It can compeletely dh world around us by creating smart devices that may also rival human brains. A nano robotics cruising the bloodstream of a cancer patient pinpointing the nucleus of the tumour & applying rediations therapy directly to the cancer source & nowhere else in the body. This technology is capable of curing cancer on the basis of an out-patient office visit and nanotech is close to realizing that in the near future.

Conclusion

Nanotechnology is predicated to be developed by 2020 but much depends on our commitment to its research. While some advances are made through unpredicated accidents or a flash of insight, others require more work. A lot depends on when we start.
