CHARACTERISTICS OF EFFECTIVE LEARNING
OUTCOMES
o There is a fine balance between too generic
and overly specific.
o To improve this outcome statement, consider
what your students need to achieve in the
course.
o In your statement of your learning outcomes,
SPECIFI
it should be clear exactly what the goal is. TY
o In particular, beware of words like
“understand” or “know.” Exactly what it
means to “understand” or “know” something
is open to interpretation.

point!
CHARACTERISTICS OF EFFECTIVE LEARNING
OUTCOMES

o An attainable outcome describes a realistic

expectation of your students.
o Your learning outcomes should be achievable
for the students in your class and achievable in SPECIFI
the time allotted to your subject. Crafting
realistic learning outcomes requires some TY
understanding of students’ prior knowledge
and skills in your subject. An unrealistic
learning outcome sets students up for failure.
