Business challenge
The continuously growing IT infrastructure became over time
complex with a multitude of servers and operating systems in use
that were increasingly difficult to manage and lead to unnecessarily
high operational costs including many applications relying on Oracle
Database technology.
The challenge was to move selected Oracle database workloads to a
robust highly performant and scaling environment in the most cost
efficient manner.
Evaluation of several technologies for database consolidation, took
place and as Eurobank is one of the largest IBM customers in Greece
that has been traditionally relying on IBM z Systems, Storage and
Power servers, z/VM - zLinux offering was selected following a
successful Proof Of Concept execution.

Eurobank is a European banking organization that focuses both on
IBM z/VM
retail clients and enterprises. Eurobank as a Group holds a strategic Oracle Database
position in retail and business banking in Bulgaria, Romania and Red Hat Enterprise Linux Server for
Serbia, offers distinguished Wealth Management services in Cyprus, System z
Luxembourg and is also present in London. IBM Integrated Facility for Linux
(IFL)
By moving the selected Oracle database workloads to the zSeries
platform, Eurobank achieved cost optimization, improving resource
utilization through virtualization, reduced hardware investment
needs, resulting in increased productivity and a lower TCO. RedHat
Linux on IBM zEnterprise environment enables the consolidation of
Business Partner
Oracle Databases, in an homogeneous environment and simplifies
the administration. New systems deployment is fast and scaled as
required. The optimized virtual machine environment size helped to
optimize data center costs.
