PREPOSITION

WHAT IS PREPOSITION?

 It is a part of speech that glues together nouns,


pronouns, and other phrases to words in a sentence.

 They are normally placed directly in front of nouns.

 They provide more clarity in the sentence by


providing specific information.

 Eg: of, to, for, with, on, at, etc.


EXAMPLES OF PREPOSITIONS IN
SENTENCES
 Make sure you sign on the dotted lines.
 He climbed up the ladder to get onto the
roof.
 She swam across the swimming pool.
 Will you please go inside the classroom.
TYPES OF PREPOSITIONS

 Prepositions of Time: They answer when


something happened, happens, or will
happen.
 Common examples: at, on, in, before, after.
 Sentences:
1. I was born on 5th July, 1994.
2. I was born at exactly 2 am.
3. It’s always cold in December.
4. We will not leave before 3 pm.
 Prepositions of Place: They are very similar to
prepositions of time. however, they answer where
something has happened, happens, or will
happen.
 Common examples: on, in, at, under, over, inside,
below, above, outside, etc.
 Sentences:
1. The cat is under the table.
2. Put the sandwich over there.
3. We will meet at the airport.
 Prepositions of Movement: They describe how
something/someone moves from one place to
another.
 Common examples: to, across, through, into, up,
over, down, past, around.
 Sentences:
1. Jack went up the hill.
2. Jill came tumbling down after.
3. The horses run around the track.
4. He has gone on vacation to France.
