INTRODUCTION:

According to Dr. Jane Framingham

psychological testing is divided into
four primary types:
• Personality Assessment
• Behavioral Assessment
• Clinical Interview and
• Assessment of Intellectual
Functioning (IQ)
Personality Assessment
Personality for laypeople refers to components of an
individual’s makeup that can elicit positive or negative
reactions from others.

Karl Menninger, an American psychiatrist, defined

personality as “the individual as a whole, his height and
weight and love and hates and blood pressure and re-
flexes; his smile his hopes and bowed legs and enlarge
tonsils. It means all that anyone is and trying to become.”
Personality Assessment
is designed to help a professional better
understand an individual’s personality.
Since personality is a complex
combination of factors that has been
developed over a person’s entire childhood
and young adulthood hence the tests that
measure personality take into account this
complexity and rich texture.
Personality Assessment

Some of the questions that may be raised during assessment:

• Describe yourself.
• What kind of music do you like?
• What are some things that have happened to you in
the past that have influenced you most?
• How do you see yourself ten years from now?
• Describe your most pleasant memory as a child.
• How would you describe your general view of the
world?
Behavioral Assessment

Behavior is anything that a person

says or does. Technically,
behavior is any muscular,
glandular, or electrical activity of
an organism.
Behavioral Assessment

is the process of observing or measuring a

person’s actual behavior to try and better
understand the behavior and the thoughts
behind it, and determine possible reinforcing
components or triggers for the behavior.
Through the process of behavioral
assessment, a person- and/ or a professional-
can track behaviors and change them.
Behavioral Assessment

may be accomplished through various

means, including behavioral observation and
behavior rating scales, analogue studies,
self monitoring, and situational performance
methods.
Clinical Interview
is a core component of any psychological
testing. It is typically last from 1 to 2 hours
in length, and most often in a clinician’s
office. Many types of mental health
professionals can conduct a clinical
interview- psychologist, psychiatrists,
clinical workers, psychiatric nurses,
amongst others.
Clinical Interview
Factors to consider:
• The interview referral question
• The context and setting of the interview
• The nature and quality of background information
available to the interviewer
• Time constraints, if any, as well as any other limiting
factors
• The motivation, willingness, and abilities of the
interviewee
• The motivation, willingness, and abilities of the
interviewee
Assessment of Intellectual Functioning

IQ test does not measure actual intelligence

– they measure what we believe might be
important components of intelligence. It is not
just answering questions about information or
vocabulary but also tapping into different
components of a person’s brain and thought
process.
Assessment of Intellectual Functioning

• Intelligence Test- the most common type administered

and include Wechsler scales.
• Neuropsychological assessment- can take up to 2
days to administer. It is not only focused on testing for
intelligence but also in determining all of the cognitive
strengths and deficits of the person. It is most usually
done with people who have suffered some sort of brain
damage, dysfunction or some kind of brain problem, just
as having a brain hemorrhage.
Assessment of Intellectual Functioning
