STEM-focused curricula aim to equip
professionals with the skills and
knowledge necessary to compete in a
global economy across the disciplines of
science, technology, engineering and
math, as well as subspecialties such as
statistics, biology, psychology, economics,
agriculture and aeronautics.

STEAM ? By integrating the arts into STEM,
STEAM-focused curricula incorporate
the study of the humanities, language
arts, dance, drama, music, visual arts,
design, new media and more. Students
who explore and master any of these
subjects can make themselves more
marketable in today’s workforce.

STEM and STEAM?
• Both STEM and STEAM center around learning about science, technology,
engineering, and math.
• Where STEAM differs is its approach to this learning.
• STEAM explores the same concepts as STEM but does this through the creative
process used in the arts because the jobs of tomorrow will require imagination and
innovation.
• STEAM learning includes coding, robotics and even using technology as a tool to
learn other concepts like reading, art and history.
• There’s more problem solving and inquiry, less instruction and testing in STEAM.

summarized as follows :

The skills developed through the arts are often
in high demand within the workforce, where
creative solutions to problems may be needed
and where different perspectives can be useful.
The language arts are also vital for
communication and, in the case of things like
sign language, can help to provide people with
greater accessibility.

Part of the creative process is knowing how to take risks and create
thoughtful solutions if a situation proves challenging. This is
something that is continually experienced in arts education. As a
student becomes more experienced with assessing challenges in a

rounded education, arts should be highlighted throughout
their curricula.
