RUSSIAN HISTORY

EARLY RUSSIA
Tradition says the Viking Rurik came to Russia in 862 A.D. and founded the first Russian dynasty in Novgorod During the 11th century, the grand dukes of Kiev held such centralizing power as existed. In 1240, Kiev was destroyed by the Mongols, and the russian territory was split into numerous smaller dukedoms

IVAN IV THE TERRIBLE

. Ivan IV the Terrible (1533 1584), first Muscovite czar is considered to have founded the Russian state.

Alexander II (18551881) pushed Russia's borders to the Pacific and into central Asia. Serfdom was abolished in 1861, but heavy restrictions were imposed on the emancipated class.

The Bolshevik Revolution

World War I demonstrated czarist corruption and inefficiency, and only patriotism held the poorly equipped army together for a time Disorders broke out in Petrograd (renamed Leningrad and now St. Petersburg) in March 1917, and defection of the Petrograd garrison launched the revolution. Nicholas II was forced to abdicate on March 15, 1917, and he and his family were killed by revolutionaries on July 16, 1918.

RUSSIA IN FIRST WORLD WAR

In 1914 the Russian government considered Germany to be the main threat to its territory. This was reinforced by Germany's decision to form the Triple Alliance.

Under the terms of this military alliance, Germany, Austria-Hungary and Italy agreed to support each other if attacked by either France or Russia. In 1907 Russia joined Britain and France to form the Triple Entente.

In 1914 the Russian Army was the largest army in the world. However, Russia's poor roads and railways made the effective deployment of these soldiers difficult. The Russian Army Air Service (RAAS) was established in 1912 and two years later owned 360 Aircrafts and 16 Airships. This made the RAAS the largest airforce in the world. In 1914 the Russian Navy had 4 battleships, 10 cruisers, 21 destroyers, 11 submarines and 50 torpedo boats.

RUSSIA IN SECOND WORLD WAR

In August 1939 Stalin's Communist Russia signed a non-aggression pact with Hitler's Nazi Germany in order to keep the aggressive Hitler away from Russia.

To keep Hitler appeased all this time, Stalin's Russia provided Germany, as agreed, with large quantities of war materials and even operational support services to assist the German war effort.

Hitler's German military, exhausted and not equipped for the harsh Russian winter, was finally stopped just before Moscow.

COLD WAR
Cold War is the conflict between the Communist nations led by the Soviet Union and the democratic nations led by the United States. After the war, the Soviet Union, United States, Great Britain, and France divided Berlin and Germany into four zones of occupation, which led to immediate antagonism between the Soviet and Western powers, culminating in the Berlin blockade in 1948.

It marked the beginning of the cold war, the simmering hostility that pitted the world's two superpowers, the U.S. and the USSR and their competing political ideologies against each other for the next 45 years.
