Technology is perhaps the greatest

agent of change in the modern

world.

While never without risk,

technological breakthroughs
promise innovative solutions to the
most pressing global issues of our
time.
-The adoption of technology has been so vast and
deep that our grandparents and children are
using some type of “smart” product everyday.

- In many ways, what we see/saw on sci-fi movies

is becoming a reality.

- Software programs are becoming smarter.

- Hardware and machines can interact with each
other.
• The emerging technologies will inevitably change the
world in many ways – some that are desirable and some
are not.

• Emerging technologies takes place at the extremes of

possible responses: POTENTIAL GAINS OR
POTENTIAL DANGERS.
• The real challenge lies in navigating between
these two poles:
BUILDING UNDERSTANDING AND
AWARENESS OF THE TENSIONS WE FACE
AND MAKING INFORMED DECISIONS
ABOUT HOW TO PROCEED.

• This task is becoming more pressing as

TECHNOLOGICAL CHANGE DEEPENS AND
ACCELERATES.
- Also known as additive manufacturing, refers to
processes used to synthesize a three-dimensional object in
which successive layers of material are formed under
computer control to create an object.

- The first 3D printed car would be in production by 2025.

The first 3D printed liver will be implanted in 2025.
- POSITIVE IMPACT: Accelerated product
development, growth in open source plans to
print a range of products, the birth of a new
industry, rise in entrepreneurial opportunities
and environmental benefits from reduced
transportation requirements.

- NEGATIVE IMPACT: increase in waste and

further burden on the environment, job losses.
ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE AND ROBOTICS
-Rapid advances in AI have revealed current governance and control
mechanisms to be at best inadequate
to meet accompanying risks.
AI development requires five building
blocks: MASSIVE DATA, AUTOMATIC
DATA TAGGING SYSTEMS, TOP
SCIENTISTS, DEFINED INDUSTRY
REQUIREMENTS AND HIGHLY
EFFICIENT COMPUTING POWER.

I believe that artificial intelligence

represents the greatest opportunity
in human history.

- Kai Fu Lee
• All of these are now tangible and available
because of the rise of the internet, mobile, big
data and computing processing capabilities in
the past 10 years.

AI should be a tool to assist humans, not replace them.

With the advent of AI, humans can finally be liberated

from mechanical tasks and devote their time to more
intellectual, creative and productive explorations.
BIOTECHNOLOGIES
- Is the use of living systems and organisms to develop or make
products, or ”any technological application that uses biological
systems”. For thousands of years, humans have used biotechnology
in agriculture, food production and medicine.

SPACE
TECHNOLOGIES
In the past five (5) decades, space has been
regarded as either a dream or the future of
mankind.

Space technology is critical in our lives

nowadays.
Space capabilities provide information that
is vital for the environment, education, food
security, public health, water resource
management, human rights, disaster relief
and nuclear security.

As space increases, there is a need to protect

its assets and environment.
DID YOU KNOW?

Many modern industrial innovations have

come from the aerospace industry?

There was a need to miniaturize electronics

in the 1960s for NASAs APOLLO program.
This laid the foundations of the
microelectronics revolution and the
development of modern computers.
USING SPACE TECHNOLOGY TO
PROTECT HUMAN RIGHTS

- Human rights violators largely went

unpunished.
- In 1999, high-resolution satellite imagery
was used to uncover mass graves in Kosovo.

- Since then, there is a growing

understanding of the role of “eyes in the
sky”
Based on a time-series analysis of
eight satellite images recorded
from December 28, 2014 to May
26, 2015, Human Rights Watch
identified a total of at least 1,425
buildings likely destroyed by
forces of pro-government militias
in Tikrit and al-Bu ‘Ajil, and in al-
Dur and al-Alam in the aftermath
of the recapture of the area. Of
this total, approximately 950
buildings were likely demolished
with high explosives and a further
400 destroyed by fire.

NORTH KOREA
- Used satellite imagery to observe
political prison camps in North Korea.
- There were political prisoners and
children who are victims of starvation,
torture and heinous humanitarian
abuses.
