INTERACTIVE

TEACHING OF
GRAMMAR
By: Louise Jean Tajanlangit
2nd Year BSED English
Objectives
■ Identify different interactive teaching strategies; and
■ Understand interactive teaching method.
Grammar
■ In linguistics, the grammar (from Ancient Greek γραμματική
grammatikḗ) of a natural language is its set of structural constraints
on speakers' or writers' composition of clauses, phrases, and words.
The term can also refer to the study of such constraints, a field that
includes domains such as phonology, morphology, and syntax, often
complemented by phonetics, semantics, and pragmatics. (Wikipedia)
■ It is something that runs through just about every aspect of language
even the simplest sentence have grammar.
What is Interactive Teaching?

■ is a means of instructing whereby the teachers actively involve the

students in their learning process by way of regular teacher-student
interaction, student-student interaction, use of audio-visuals, and
hands-on demonstrations. The students are constantly encouraged to
be active participants.
■ It is a method that incorporates interactivity into lessons. Using
games to teach grammar not only engages students but, also helps
them to remember what they’ve learned.
■ Formation of the young specialist takes place in university
classrooms, and time consuming process of training based on the
methods of teaching effectiveness that ultimately determines the skill
level of the future specialist.
■ There are several models of pedagogy study:
■ Passive - students act as the “object” of the study (listening and
watching)
■ Active – students act as the “subject” of learning (independent work,
creative tasks)
■ Interactive - Inter (mutual), act (act). The learning process is carried
out in a continuous active cooperation of all students. Students and
teachers are equal subjects of study.
How to teach using the interactive
teaching method.
■ Present- at the beginning of class, start by explaining the grammar
clearly.
Example: Letting students gave example sentence using the basic
grammar rules you taught.
■ Practice- Once you’re confident that your students have a good
understanding of the basics, use structured, interactive practice to deepen
their comprehension.
Example: A fill in the blank activity can be held and let students identify
the correct answer individually or by group.
■ Apply- After a short practice session, use more interactive methods to
deepen students’ understanding and comfort with the grammar taught.
Activity tips

■ Watching movie scene and fill in the blanks

Choose a scene from an age-appropriate movie that fits the students
level.
Note: Movies with strong English accent is not advisable for
elementary students since the are still learning about the language and
they will have a difficulty in understanding it.
■ Bring real life situations as an example
Students can learn better when the work they do engages concrete
aspects of their lives.
■ Use Music
Music is a fantastic learning tool, as melody and rhythm are
excellent aids to memorization.

■ Use feedback slips at the end of each lessons.

This will give them a chance to summarize everything they’ve
learned throughout the lesson as well as their struggles so that you can
plan out your next lesson.
■ What was the most useful thing you learned today?
■ What grammar element did you find difficult and why?
■ What part of today’s class would you like to go over again in the next
class?
Method tips

■ Teach in the language you’re teaching-even grammar

By using English in the classroom constantly, you move from
treating English as an object to be learned to using English as a tool to
communicate.
■ Switch roles
You can make them teach the lesson by forming groups for class
reporting.
That’s All
