• Brazil has the current population of 215 million. Television
is still the most-consumed type of media in Brazil, and
audience concentration is high in this sector. However,
Brazil is still considered a developing country particularly in
today’s digital age. In fact, In 2018, the Brazilian legislation
ruled that media literacy should be taught in all schools by
2020, but there was a lack of well-developed pedagogic
materials in Portuguese to teach the topic in schools.

• Brazil has the 5th largest number of mobile phone and
Internet users in the world. According to an article by
Claudionor Coelho in the EE Times, there are 189 million
mobile phones, 200 million tech-savvy consumers, and an
exploding demand for PCs, leading to an increase in Internet
usage in Brazil. Data published by Ookla indicate that internet
users in Brazil could have expected that Median mobile
internet connection speed via cellular networks is 22.60 Mbps
and Median fixed internet connection speed is 83.25 Mbps.
MIL/Technology in Brazil
• R&D (Research and development) and innovation are “enablers” of the
digital transformation in the Brazilian E-Digital Strategy (MCTIC, 2018),
which calls for the development of an R&D and innovation policy for the
21st century. The examples of technology innovations in Brazil are
microelectronics, sensors, automation and robotics, supercomputers,
artificial intelligence, big data and analytics, high-performance networks,
cryptography, 5G networks, and cloud computing.
