REMEMBERING RIZAL;
- In December 30, 1896, Rizal
Execution became an important in
the history of Philippine Revolution.
- His death activated the Revolution
that resulted in the declaration of
Philippine independence in 1986.
- In the Philippines, Jose Rizal was
considered as one of the most
important Filipino heroes of the
revolution.
- In 1901, he was declared as a
National Hero by the Taft
Commission, also called the
Philippine Commission of 1901.
- To honor Rizal's sacrifice and
death, a monument was built in
every town and December 30 was
made a national holiday.
- - In
some provinces, Men who were
mostly professionals organized and
became members of Caballeros de
Rizal, currently known as the
Knights of Rizal. 4

- Rizalistas believe that Rizal has a

RIZAL AS THE TAGALOG CHRIST;
- In late 1898 and early 1899, La
indepedencia & El Heraldo de la
Revolution—A revolutionary
newspaper that reported about Filipinos
commemorating Rizal's death.
- In Batangas, People said to have
gathered “Tearfully wailling before a
portrait of Rizal (ileto, 1998).
- Peasant in laguna regarded him as "the
lord of a kind of paradise in the heart of
MT. MAKILING" (ileto, 1998).
- Early decades of 1900s, different
religious organizations honoring him
as the "Filipino Jesus Christ"
(Ocampo, 2011).
- Many organizations gave Rizal and
venerated him as: "Tagalog Christ",
"Filipino Christ", "King of the
Philippines“.

◈ Miguel de Unamuno
- He was a Spanish Writer and
also a philosopher.
- He gave the title “Tagalog
Christ” to Rizal in 1907.

◈ Apolinario de la Cruz (1815-1841)

- Who founded the religious Confraternity in

Cofradia de San Jose was also considered as a

“Tagalog Christ” by his followers.

◈ Felipe Salvador (1870-1912)

- He was an Filipino Revolutionary
- Also known as ‘Apo Ipe’
- He founded the messianic society Santa
Iglesia (Holy Church)
- He was also called by his followers as the
“Filipino Christ” and the “King of the
Philippines”.

- The aim of the millenarian group is to
transform the society that often
symbolized or represented by a hero or
prophet.
RIZALISTAS:
- the same can also be said with the
Rizalistas group which Risen after Jose
Rizal’s Death in 1896
- A religious movement that believes in
the divinity of Jose Rizal
- Jose Rizal as the reincarnation of Jesus
Christ
- Rizalistas is also believe that Rizal,
just like Jesus Christ, would
eventually return to life and will save
mankind.
As Trillana (2006) puts It
“ For both Jesus and Rizal, life on earth
was a summon and submission to a call
from the beginning, both knew or had
intimations of a mission they had to
Fullfill, the redemption of this people
from oppression in the case of Rizal.”

RIZAL AS THE TAGALOG CHRIST
- Reincarnation in the context of
Rizalistas means that both Jose Rizal
and Jesus Christ led parallel lives.
- Rizal and Jesus were both Asians and
had a brilliant minds and
extraordinary talents.
- Rizal and Jesus believed in the
Golden rule.
- Rizal and Jesus cured the sick
- Rizal and Jesus were rabid reformers,
believe in the universal brotherhood
of men, were closely associated small
group of followers
- Both died young (Rizal at 35 while
Jesus at 33) at the hands of their
enemies.

- In the context of canonization
initiated by the Philippine
independent Church (PIC) or La
Iglesia Filipina Independiente in the
earliest Record about Rizal being
declared as a saint.
- The PIC became a major religious
sect w/ a number of followers
supporting its anti-friar and anti-
imperialist campaigns was founded
on August 3, 1902.
- The PICs official organ published the
“ the Acta de Canonization de los
grandes Martires de la Patria Dr.
Rizal y PP. Burgos, Gomez y
Zamora” (Proceeding the
canonization of the great Martyrs of
the country Dr. Rizal and fathers

- Gregorio Aglipay is head of council
of bishops; was met on manila on

GROUPS VENERATING JOSE RIZAL
- Adarnista or the Iglesiang Pilipina
- Adarnista believes that:
• Rizal is a God of the Filipino
people.
• Rizal is a true God and a true man.
• Rizal was not executed as has been
mentioned by historians.
• Man is endowed with a soul; as
such, man is capable of good
deeds.
• Heaven and hell exist but are,
nevertheless, “within us”.
• The abode of the members of the
sect in Bongabon, Nueva Ecija is
the New Jerusalem or Paradise.
• The caves in Bongabon are the
dwelling place of Jehovah or God.
There are four persons in God:
God, the Father, the Son, the Holy
Ghost, and the Mother (Virgin
Mary)
