Virtual memory

Virtual memory is a common technique used in

a computer's operating system (OS). Virtual
memory uses both hardware and software to enable
a computer to compensate for physical memory
shortages, temporarily transferring data from
random access memory (RAM) to disk storage.

EXAMPLE OF VIRTUAL MEMORY

A business owner uses their computer's virtual memory system when

running multiple applications simultaneously. The user tries to load
their email in their browser window while also running word
processing software, shift scheduling software and a content
management system.

What is the importance of virtual memory?

The main advantage of virtual memory is that an OS

can load programs larger than its physical memory.
It makes an impression to the users that the
computer has unlimited memory. It also provides
memory protection. In order to realize the mapping
operations, virtual memory needs to use page tables
and translations.
