• At age 12, that force increases up to around 4 kg and then steadily to 10-20 kg at older ages

• Beyond about age 15-16, as the screw is activated results in one of three things:
• A fracture after 2-3 days of increasing force that the patient often can hear
(“I heard a pop, and then the teeth started to move”)
• The patient perseveres despite discomfort but only tooth movement occurs
• Pain leads to abandoning the attempted expansion
