Paint Technology

Basic Paint Technology
What is Paint?
 Paint is used to decorate,
protect, and prolong the life of
natural and synthetic materials,
and acts as a barrier against
environmental conditions.
COMPOSITION OF PAINT
 Resin (Binder)
 Pigment

 Additives

 Solvent
RESIN (BINDER)
 One of the most important and
necessary components of paint.
 It binds the pigment particles
together from a cohesive layer after
the evaporation of solvent.
Volatile Solvents

paint film
SUBSTRATE SUBSTRATE
PIGMENT
 provides color, opacity, and
coverage
 finely ground crystalline solids that
are dispersed in coatings to give
color and covering power (hiding
power)
ADDITIVES
 It is a special component of paint
and are used in small quantities to
impart additional characteristics to
the paint.
SOLVENT
 It is a volatile liquid used to obtain
desired viscosity and flow of the
paint.
 It keeps the solid components of
paint in suspension and also
influences the adhesion properties of
the surface.

FILTERING/PACKING QUALITY CHECKING COLORMATCHING

WEIGHING
 Before weighing, all raw materials are
checked and inspected by QC personnel
to ensure that the raw materials are
okay for production use. WEIGHING

 After the QC RM Inspection was done,

the operator proceed weighing the raw
materials and start batching the resins,
solvents, & additives then proceed to
pre-mix stage.
PRE-MIXING
 The batch will undergo mixing to
ensure the homogeneity of the
batch. This stage is also called pre- PRE-MIXING

dispersion.
 The pigment will be charge while
mixing to ensure the proper
dispersion.
 Once the batch is well-mixed, it will
proceed to the grinding stage.
DISPERSION
 Dispersion - is a process in which a dry
powder substance (or pigment) is mixed
with a liquid such that all the individual
molecules and particles of the dry powder
become separated from each other and are
evenly distributed and completely mixed in
the liquid medium.
GRINDING
 In grinding, the breaking-down of
the pigments into desired particle GRINDING

size and stabilizing it by covering

each particle with resin.
 The fineness of grind will be
checked using a Grind Gauge, the
pigments are usually ground
between 2 and 25 microns (1
micron = 1/1000 mm).
Horizontal Bead Mill
LETDOWN
 In letdown stage, charging of the
additional resins, solvents, and LETDOWN

additives into the mill paste to

complete the formulation and further
stabilize the batch.

COLORMATCHING
S

 Charging of tinting colors and other

additives in order to achieve desired
COLORMATCHING
color and gloss.
QUALITY CHECKING
 Check all required parameters to
determine the functionality and intrinsic
properties of the product prior to approval QUALITY CHECKING
for packing and delivery.
Wet Properties Dry Film Properties
 Grind  Gloss
 Specific  Hardness
Gravity  Adhesion
 Viscosity  Film Appearance
 % NVM
FILTERING
 Filtration is essential to ensure that
contaminants such as airborne particles,
unmixed products or skins which have formed FILTERING/PACKING
are removed.
PACKING
 Filling machines are used to pack
the paint more easily and FILTERING/PACKING
efficiently
 Also, it is used to avoid spillage
and to save time
Role of a Chemical
Engineer in a Paint
Industry

ROLE OF A CHEMICAL ENGINEER
 Research & Development Engineer
 Technical Service Engineer
 Quality Control Engineer
 Process Engineer
 Others
RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT ENGINEER
 Performs product development activities
and formulations of newly developed
product
 Conducts raw material evaluation for cost
reduction purposes, product improvement
or as an alternative material
 Conducts formula evaluation for
modification based on feedback from the
manufacturing department
TECHNICAL SERVICE ENGINEER
 Conducts on-site visit to ensure that
customer’s requirements are adequately
met
 Conducts on-site problem analysis and
troubleshooting in case of problems
 Conducts functional trials at customer’s
line
QUALITY CONTROL ENGINEER
 Ensures that all raw materials and
products produced would meet the
required specifications based on
approved quality measurements
 Conducts study on how to utilized
non-conforming products
PROCESS ENGINEER
 Ensures adherence of production
processes to quality policy and
procedures
 In-charge of close monitoring of 1st
production batches & identify
possible problems
OTHER ROLES
 POLLUTION CONTROL OFFICER
 SAFETY OFFICER
 PLANNING ENGINEER
 PURCHASING ENGINEER
 SALES ENGINEER
“As Chemical Engineers, our role in the Paint Industry is as
broad as the colors we make.

For example, in Quality Control, we are involved not only

on evaluation of physical properties of paint, but also in
investigation of problems encountered. This includes
analysis of results, technical report writing and design of
possible corrective action and standard specifications.
There is also the conduct of product & process audits, as
well as safety audits.
Engr. Rex Anthony S. Sabilano
Lastly, I can clearly say that Chemical Engineers have an
important role in the Paint Industry.”
