IMPRESSIONISM

What is Impressionism?

 Is an art movement and style of painting that started in France
during the 1860s. Impressionism is a light, spontaneous manner of
painting.

 The movement’s name came from Claude Monet’s early work,

Impression: A Sunrise, which was singled out for criticism in an
exhibition. The hallmark of the style is the attempt to capture the
subjective impression of light in a scene.

 Although the work of the Impressionist painters appears very

spontaneous, they carefully and scientifically planned their work.

 Monet felt that nature
knows no black or white and
nature knows no line. These
beliefs resulted in this artist
creating beautifully colorful
and energetic pieces of
work. The leading member
of the Impressionists,
Claude Monet captured the
spontabeity of nature’s
wonderful light

Monet eliminated browns in
his paintings.

 It is likely that his palette was

limited to white, yellow,
vermilion (red), rose, light blue,
dark blue and violet.

 Most amazingly, considering the

number of landscapes that monet
created during his career, is the
absence of green in his palette.
‘IMPRESSION,SUNRISE’ gave the name to the entire impressionist movement .

experience rather than physical reality

 Expressionism developed as an avant-garde style before the First World

War. It remained popular during the Weimar Republic,[1] particularly in
Berlin. The style extended to a wide range of the arts, including
expressionist architecture, painting, literature, theatre, dance, film and
music
What are the characteristics of
Expressionism?

 Expressionist art tired to convey emotion and meaning
rather than reality. Each artist had their own unique
way of “Expressing” their emotion in their art. In order
to express emotion the subjects are open distorted or
exaggerated at the same time colors are often vivid and
shocking.
When was the Expressionism
movement started?

 The Expressionist Movement occurred during the early
part of the 1990s.
