Buddha
• Real name Siddhartha Gautama, born in 563 BC.
• Father King Suddhodhan and Mother Queen Mayadevi.
• Made predictions of his future about him being either great
emperor or great sage.
• King locked Siddhartha inside the castle with the fear of him
being a sage than emperor.
• After reaching a suitable age, he was married to Princess
Yasodhara and even had a child with her.
• Suffocated being inside the palace.
• Stepping outside the castle after 29 years since his birth.

• Met old, ill and dead people during his visit outside the palace.
• Siddhartha got exposed to all sorrows and pain of life.
• Left the palace to become a sage and find universal truth.
• Took advice of many sages during his new journey.
• Meditated under the pipal tree.
• Got enlightened on the day of Baisakh Purnima and this day
got named as Buddha Purnima.

Also known as Vesak, is a Buddhist festival
Marks the birth, enlightenment and mahaparinirvana of Gautam
Buddha;
• Observed in the majority of Asia;
• Exact date: First full moon in the fourth month in the Chinese lunar
calendar; typically lies in May; also called Thrice Blessed Festival.

On this day,
• people worship Buddha by offering prayers,
• dress in white, yellow or saffron clothes
• According to legend, a woman named Sujata once offered Gautam
Buddha kheer on his birthday; so kheer is given
• Visits Swayambhu, Namo Buddha and Bodh Gaya

Known by various names such as Buddha Jayanti, Buddha Purnima, Baishakh
Purnima, and Vesak
● Greatly important to Shakya Clan of Newars, considered as a continuation of the
sage of the Sakyas,
● Called ‘Swanya Punhi’ in Newari; the full moon days of flower
● Commemorated with a gentle and calm passion
● People, particularly ladies, visit common monasteries to witness a Buddhist sutra
and offer prayers and light butter lamps
● Followers follow strict vegetarian meals throughout the Vesak month,
● Kheer i.e., sweet rice porridge is commonly served
● Devotees, monks and priests offer prayers and pay their respect by visiting
Buddhist temples such as Swayambhunath, Boudhanath and circumambulate there;

In Bangladesh, the President and Prime Minister deliver speeches addressing the
history and importance of Buddhism; Performances of Buddha's life are also
presented.

• In India, at the Mahabodhi Temple of Bodhgaya, the temple is decorated with


colored decorations; devotees of Gautam Buddha do special prayers under the
tree

• In Japan and China, people pour a beverage on small Buddha


statues decorated with flowers, as if bathing a new-born baby

• Lion dancing is also a major tradition practiced during Buddha's
