REVELATION
Learning Target: Relate how divine revelation begin and developed.
 Divine Revelation is God’s
speaking to man and making
Himself known to him, in
order that man might be united
to God.
God made Himself known to man through:
 Created nature
 Chosen representatives – revealed Himself to them as
friends. He revealed to them His will, His special plan for our
salvation. This we call supernatural revelation, because it is a
meeting with God, and an understanding of Him that is not
possible by mere natural means.
To the first man God made Himself known by love. But
man rebelled against that love. In consequence there
followed a long period of estrangement of man from God,
and this led to gradual estrangement of man from His
fellowmen.
(Genesis 11:1-9, The story of the Tower of Babel)
Yet God never abandoned mankind.
(Gen. 6, Story of Noah)
 God in His mercy first made Himself known, in a
special way to Abraham. This was the beginning of
God’s self-revelation to mankind. It was also the
beginning of man’s gradual return to God. This public
revelation continued throughout the Old Testament
period, to the people of Israel.
 Throughout the Patriarch then through
Moses and the Prophets He taught this
nation to acknowledge Himself as the one
living and true God.
