Purposive Communication
 At the end of the unit, students are expected to:

1. explain the concept of communication as used in

business organization;
2. identify the essential qualities of effective business
letter;
3. describe the quality of an effective letter; and
4. apply the 7Cs in business writing

Communication in Business
• core in every organization
• many of the management problems in the
field of business are related to communication
• must be clear, succinct and
• accurate

Business Writing
• type of written communication, usually with standard
structure and style
• addresses the needs of specific audiences and has prose
and lists for a particular topic that concerns business

• Clearness/Clarity
• Concreteness
• Conciseness
• Concise
• Correctness
 PARTS OF A BUSINESS LETTER

Essential Parts
∙ heading
∙ dateline
∙ inside address
∙ salutation
∙ body of the business letter
∙ complimentary close

Optional Parts
• only when needed
 STYLES OF BUSINESS LETTERS

Full block style

All parts (dateline, inside address, salutation,
body of the letter, complimentary close and
signature) are justified to the left margin.
 STYLES OF BUSINESS LETTERS

Modified block

The dateline, complimentary close, and

signature are aligned to the right while the rest
of the parts are aligned to the left.
 STYLES OF BUSINESS LETTERS

Semi-block
exactly the same as the modified except
that the first line of each paragraph is indented.
 PUNCTUATION STYLES

Open punctuation
• does not make use of any punctuation marks
in the parts like heading, inside address,
salutation or closing

Standard/mixed punctuation
• uses a colon after the salutation and a comma follows the
complimentary close
 Resume vs Curriculum Vitae

Resume
• a short, straight-to-the-point, document created for the
purpose of applying to a specific job.

Curriculum Vitae (CV)

• very in-depth document that describes your career journey
step-by-step, including all sorts of personal information

Chronological Resume
• focuses heavily on your work history

Functional Resume
• designed to focus on your relevant
professional skills rather than your
chronological work history

Combination Resume
• mixes the most useful elements of the chronological and
functional resume formats
