WHEN YOU WILL NEED A PROSTATE
BIOPSY.
 If your PSA (Prostate Specific Antigen) is high.
 An MRI scan shows up a lesion in the prostate.
 Previous inconclusive prostate biopsies.
PROCEDURE

 The prostate is sampled transrectally during pre-rectal examination with the patient in
lithotomy position.
 A custom made or commercially available needle guide (such as the Franzen needle guide)
may be used.
 Alternatively a 16 gauge blunt, tripped venous cannula may serve as a needle guide. The
cannula is taped at the index finger of the gloved hand with its tip just proximal to the pulp
of the index finger , and finger cot drawn over it.
 The prostate lesion is palpated with the pulp of the finger and sample by puncturing
through the finger cot with a long gauge needle introduced through the cannula.
SIDE EFFECT OF PROSTATE BIOPSY

 Blood in the urine for up to 10 days.


 Blood in the semen for about 6 weeks(harmless).
 Bruising in the perineal area (can cause discomfort).
 Urinary infection has a risk of about 10%.
 Hemorrhage (bleeding) preventing from passing urine – about 2% chance.
 Some patient have difficulty passing urine and may require a temporary catheter.
