Place Making assignment

The Mombasa Old Town is an area with special characteristics given that it is one of
the surviving city states that existed and reached their peak in the 17-18th Centuries.
To this end both the colonial government and independent Kenya government have
treated this are as a special area worthy of careful planning consideration.

The whole of Mombasa Old town measures 72 hectares and 31 ha (marked in yellow
below) is a gazzetted conservation area and is a buffer zone for the Fort Jesus World
Heritage Site. Recognising that fact that the socio-economic development of the area
greatly declined after the opening the opening of the Kilindini Port, Completion of the
railway line to Kisumu and shifting of the colonial headquarters to Nairobi;
The government of Kenya and County Government of Mombasa is desirous of
developing a rejuvenation plan of the gazzetted Mombasa Old Town that is in keeping
with UNESCO guidelines of the area as a buffer zone of a world heritage site.

As the consultant charged with this assignment highlight:-


1. How you will go about identifying the key aspects underpinning your rejuvenation
plan
2. Identify the key elements of the proposed plan and their justification
3. Proposed measures to be enacted to enhance the operationalization of the plan
