Indian Sepoy Rebellion

In 1857, the worst and

bloodiest rebellion against
British colonial rule began in
India. According to one
version, the unprecedented
massacre was caused by...
cow and pig fat.
UNDER THE BRITISH FLAG

British India included huge areas - modern India, Pakistan

and Bangladesh (over 4.2 million sq km in total) - and a large
population (about 283 million people). Direct rule by the
Crown (1858-1947) did not lead these lands to prosperity.
Mass starvation and pandemics had killed tens of millions of
people by the early 20th century, and poverty remained
rampant for most.
India's national
leaders
Nana Sahib - Sipai leader Mahatma Gandhi, the Subhas Chandra Bos, better known as
country leading fighter for Netaji, was prepared to fight British rule by
independence any means necessary: he particularly
cooperated with the Germans and Japanese
On February 20, 1947, British Prime Minister Clement Attlee said that the British would hand
over full power to the Indians by the summer of 1948. But independence was declared even
earlier - on August 15, 1947.
