Introduction
• Small scale irrigation is a key factor for the
development of many rural communities in
Ethiopia which needs a variety of water lifting
devices called irrigation pumps
• A treadle pump is an elegant foot operated
human powered positive displacement water
lifting device (irrigation pump).
• Two types of treadle pumps:
 suction (overflow) type
 pressure type
Cont….
• Pressure type treadle pump is a low cost manually
powered water lifting device with modified delivery end
so that water can be fed in to a pipe rather than an open
channel for the purpose of drip irrigation.
• Some features of the pressure pump:
 water can be lifted to elevated plots of land
 it can be pumped through hoses over long distances (up to 500 m)
horizontally
 it works with maximum suction lift of 20 feet (6.096 m)
 it can be used to fill the elevated tanks of drip and sprinkler
irrigation systems
 It is a portable self contained unit which sits at ground level
 optimum utilization of energy spent is achieved
 better flexibility in installation
Working principles
• The pump consists of two pistons situated inside
two cylinders, which rise and fall when an
operator treadles in a walking motion
• The treadles are used as means of pushing the
piston up and down
• The section and delivery stroke comes one after
the other
• One way, oppositely directed rubber valves are
used for each stroke
Design specifications
• Design assumptions:
 one stroke is treadle in/of one second
 friction b/n the rubber cup and the cylinder is almost negligible
 The cylinder is filled to its volume in one second
• Design requirement:
 suction lift= 7m
 Delivery head= 7-8m
• Design specifications:
 pressure developed (p)=F/a=163.3 kpa
 discharge (q)= 1.96 lit/sec
 cylinder diameter (d)= 111.7mm
 cylinder stroke length (l)= 200mm
Improved parameters
• Average discharge
• Time
• Number of strokes

Manufacturing design
• Primary aim:
 the pump is redesigned to be satisfactory in all ways for its
intended purposes
• Secondary aim:
 the pump is redesigned for the most economical method of
manufacturing
• Manufacturing processes used:
 shearing and cutting
 rolling
 bending
 drilling
 welding
 grinding
Testing results
• Out puts of testing the manufactured
prototype:
 suction lift= 6 meters
 delivery head= 6 meters

• Efficiency:
Einput=force on the piston * stroke length
=1600*0.2
=320Nm
Cont….
• Eoutput=discharge of pump*density of
water*acceleration due to gravity*total head
=0.56*10-3*103*10*12
=67.2Nm
• Efficiency= Einput/Eoutput
=> η =67.2/320
=21%
Comparison for the same kg of
operator
Cont….
Cost estimation
• It requires:
 experience
 engineering know how
 judgement
 knowledge of the product and,
 what it takes to produce it in a cost effective
manner
• The total cost for one treadle pump is
calculated to be:
Cont….
parts Materials used cost
cylinder sheet metal 125.00
manifold sheet metal 125.00
support RHS 100.00
Rocker arm sheet metal 50.00
treadle RHS 200.00
handle RHS 50.00
Piston sheet metal 100.00
valves rubber 12.00
Bolt and nut 8.00
electrode 80.00
Anti rust and paint 50.00

total cost 900.00

conclusion
• The pressure treadle pump retains the
advantages of the standard treadle pump,
including:
 low cost
Efficient foot powered operation
 locally manufactured
Easily maintained
• It can generate significant additional
income for smallholders (farmers) if
produced in mass.
Recommendation
• For the efficient operation and longer life of the
pump system designed and manufactured:
 proper assembly, maintenance and operational activities
should be followed
 the cylinders and manifold should be welded precisely and
tested to be free from leakage
 the water should be checked for its property before use
 valves should be checked before and after work
When producing in mass, proper testing of the sample
(prototype) is a must.
Proposed extra improvements
• The pump can be further improved for its
pressure by decreasing diameter of the
cylinder and preparing rubber cup based
on that dimension.
