Exploration E

Grade: 2nd

Standard:
2-LS4-1 Make observations of plants and animals to
compare the diversity of life in different habitats.

Objective:
Students will be able to identify characteristics of 5
different groups of vertebrates.
Instructions:
1. Pair up into a group of 5.

2. Each group will receive a packet of animal pictures and

index cards. Look carefully at each animal picture.

3. Thinking like a biologist, I would like you and your

group members to group animals together that are like
each other in some way. Please remember to use your
“Partner Power” sheet to guide you in respectful
conversation.
INstructions Continued:
4. After you have grouped your animals, write the
characteristics that show how they are alike on the index
cards. You should have one index card for each of your
groups.

5. Try to think of at least 2 ways they are alike and write

them on the index card.
For example:

I might say that these two

animals are alike since
they both live in water and
have scales.
Ask yourselves and your Partner
these Questions:
What patterns do you see?

Why did you group these animals together?

What do they have in common?

Reflect:
What are some other forms of classifications in the world?

What do you think classification means?

Why is the purpose of classification?
