Yeast is a single-cell organism, called
Saccharomyces cerevisiae, which
needs food, warmth, and moisture to
thrive. It converts its food—sugar and
starch—through fermentation, into
carbon dioxide and alcohol. It's the
carbon dioxide that makes baked goods
rise.
1. Why was leaven so rigorously
excluded from meal offerings in the
Sinaitic legislation?

Leaven represented corruption and

therefore symbolized evil.
 2. Why was leaven permitted in
certain other offerings?
Leaven, a part of the daily food, is
included in the offering of thanks.
Some hold that leaven here symbolizes
the evil that still inheres in the
worshipper.

The record indicates that Israel’s haste in

However, in 1Corinthians 5:7-8 the Passover

corruption, must be taken into account.

Haste may have been the reason; but
the latent symbolism of evil cannot be
entirely ruled out.
