Yeast is a single-cell organism, called
Saccharomyces cerevisiae, which
needs food, warmth, and moisture to
thrive. It converts its food—sugar and
starch—through fermentation, into
carbon dioxide and alcohol. It's the
carbon dioxide that makes baked goods
rise.
1. Why was leaven so rigorously
excluded from meal offerings in the
Sinaitic legislation?

Leaven represented corruption and

therefore symbolized evil.
2. Why was leaven permitted in
certain other offerings?
Leaven, a part of the daily food, is
included in the offering of thanks.
Some hold that leaven here symbolizes
the evil that still inheres in the
worshipper.
3. Why was leaven excluded from the
Passover?
The record indicates that Israel’s haste in
leaving Egypt prompted this exclusion.
However, in 1Corinthians 5:7-8 the Passover
as a type of Christ, who was fully free of
corruption, must be taken into account.
4. Does Lot’s use of unleavened bread
anticipate the symbolism of the Sinaitic
legislation?
Haste may have been the reason; but
the latent symbolism of evil cannot be
entirely ruled out.
5. What does Amos 4:5 indicate?

The degenerate northern kingdom

mixed the permitted with the
forbidden.
6. What about the New Testament
significance of leaven?

Apart from Matthew 13:33 leaven

symbolizes either Jewish legalism
or moral corruption
7. What then about Matthew
13:33?
Some interpret leaven as symbolizing
the final apostasy of the professing
church; others explain leaven as
symbolizing the permeating effect of
the gospel in Christianizing the world.
GALATIANS 5:9 NIV

“A little yeast works

through the whole batch
of dough.”
Galatians 5:9, NLT:
This false teaching is
like a little yeast that
spreads through the
whole batch of dough!
