Cybercrime:

Cybercrime is a term that describes electronic hacking. As defined by the US Department of Justice,
‘Cybercrime is an act of creating, distributing, altering, stealing, misusing and destroying information
through computer manipulation of cyberspace; without the use of physical force and against the will or
interest of the victim.’
Types of Cybercrime:

◦ Spoofing and Phishing
Hacking:
Hacking means an illegal intrusion into a computer system or network. A
person or programmer who breaks into a computer system in order to steal, change or destroy information
as a form of cyber-terrorism is called a hacker. Hackers mostly steal credit card information, transferring
money from various accounts to their account.
Spreading of
Computer Virus:
The spreading of computer viruses or infecting other programs in
another form of cybercrime. For example, the love bug virus, crippled at least 45 million computers
worldwide and caused an estimated damage worth 10 billions of dollars in 2001 in about 20 countries.
Denial of Service
Attacks:
Denial of service attacks is done by a website which is flooded with data with the
intension of crashing and preventing access. It can take hours for the company to regain control by the time
it may have suffered considerable financial losses.
Cyber Stalking:
An act of threatening or harassment by using the Internet services
is known as cyber stalking. It can also be followed by physical harm to the victim.
Software Piracy:
Theft of software for illegal use or distribution of products is
referred to as software piracy.
Spoofing and phishing:
Spoofing refers to the technique used to
gain unauthorised access to computers by sending messages to a computer with an IP address indicating its
authenticity. On the other hand, phishing refers to the act of luring of an Internet user to reveal personal
details (like password and credit card information) on a fake webpage or email form pretending to come
from a legitimate company (like their bank).
Cyber Ethics:
The term cyber ethics refers to a set of moral rules or a code of
behaviour that is to be followed while being online. As a responsible netizen you should observe the
following rules to help make cyberspace a safe place.
Some people show low standard of morals in cyberspace. The Cyber Law or Internet Law governs the
Internet and you may attract legal liabilities if you perform the following activites:
◦ Viruses or malicious codes.
◦ Unauthorised access to computers.
◦ Indecent content on the Internet.
◦ Obtaining property or services online by deception.
