Natural/Nature Farming
Natural Farming reflects the experiences and philosophy of Japanese farmer
Masanobu Fukuoka. His books The One-Straw Revolution: An Introduction to
Natural Farming (Emmaus: Rodale Press, 1978) and The Natural Way of
Farming: The Theory and Practice of Green Philosophy (Tokyo; New York:
Japan Publications, 1985) describe what he calls "do-nothing farming" and a
lifetime of nature study. "His farming method involves no tillage, no fertilizer,
no pesticides, no weeding, no pruning, and remarkably little labor! He
accomplishes all this (and high yields) by careful timing of his seeding and
careful combinations of plants (polyculture). In short, he has brought the
practical art of working with nature to a high level of refinement
Nature farming
Organic farming
• Integration
• Lees tillage
• Organic/bio-pesticides and fertilizers allowed
• On the way to living soil
Principles of nature farming
• No tillage
• No fertilizers
• No pesticides
• No weeding
• No pruning
Principles of permaculture
• Care for the Earth
Spaceship earth implies that we have the power and wisdom to
manage the earth
Living soil
Stewardship-ownership through legal status
Biodiversity-caring for all the diverse life forms that inhabit the
earth
Living things-the killing of other life is inevitable
• Care for the people
Care for self-start with the self, but expands in widening circles to
include families, neighbours, local and wider communities.
Non-material well being-enjoy a sunset rather watching a movie,
look after health by walking rather than consuming medicine,
spend time playing with a child rather than buying them a toy.
Permaculture
Set limits to consumption and reproduction
and redistribute surplus
