Transition Signals

Transition Signals

■ Transition signals are connecting words or phrases that strengthen

the internal cohesion of your writing.
■ Transition signals act like bridges between parts of your writing.
■ They link your sentences and paragraphs together smoothly so

that they flow and there are no abrupt jumps or breaks between
ideas.
■ Transition signals are used to signal relationships between ideas in

your writing.
■ For example, the transition signal 'for example' is used to
give examples, while the word 'while' is used to show a contrast.
■ In addition, there are phrases like 'in addition' for adding new

ideas.
