• Symmetry with respect to y-axis if even function

• the origin if odd function

 if

 Note: if f is even, then for each point (x,y)

 if f is odd, then for each point (x,y) f there is (-x,-y) f

 Example: if (-2,-3) is a point on an even function then (2,-3) is also a point on the graph
 Example: if (-2,-3) is a point on an odd function then (2,3) is also a point on the graph

 Notes:
 If all powers of x is even f is even function
 If all powers of x is odd f is odd function
 If powers of x are odd and even f is neither odd nor even function
 In a function (numbers only) are always even

All powers are even so f(x) is even)

f(x) is odd function

f(x) is even function

f(x) is even function

Ex: If (-1,2) is a point on graph symmetric with respect to the y-axis then what point also on this graph?
Solution: (1,2)

Ex: If (-3,4) is a point on graph symmetric with respect to the origin then what point also on the graph
Solution: (3,-4)
Solution:
X=-2 X+2
X=2 X-2
(Try to divide by an odd function such as (X, Sinx)

A) f(-x)=f(x)

B) F(-1)=1
C) F(-x)

Finding points of intersection of two graphs:
To find the points of intersection of the graph of two functions f and g, it is enough to solve the equation f(x)=g(x).
The roots of this equation are the x-coordinates of the point of intersection. Then by substituting the value of x in
f(x) or g(x) to find the y-coordinate.
It is better to substitute the value of x in both f(x) and g(x) especially in absolute value and radical functions.

4. f
f(x)=g(x) f(x)=g(x)

Put each value of x in f(x)

Put each value of x in both

F(x)=g(x) F(x)=g(x)
=

The value of absolute value is always a positive number

Put each value of x in both

F(x)=g(x) F(x)=g(x)
First we need to write the function in terms of y

F(x)=g(x)

Put the value of x in the second equation
