    Rizal had several romances during his life. His first love was Leonor Rivera, the daughter of his landlord in Manila who he was engaged to. During his time at UST he admired Consuelo Ortiga y Perez but did not pursue her further to not break his friendship with Eduardo de Lete who also loved her. In Madrid, Spain he was attracted to Seiko Usui, a Japanese woman. In London he knew Gertrude Beckette and Nellie Boustead. While in Belgium and Dapitan he did not have any known romantic relationships.

    • Consuelo was the daughter of Don Pablo ( Vice-
    president of the Council of the Philippines in the

    • Rizal composed a lovely poem on August 22, 1883
    dedicated to Consuelo titled A La Seňorita C. O. y P.
    ( To Miss C. O. y P.) expressed his admiration to
    her.
    • But backed out for two reasons:
    1. he was still engaged to Leonor Rivera
    2. his friend and co-worker in the Propaganda
    Movement, Eduardo de Lete was madly inlove with
    Consuelo and he had no wish to break their friendship
    because of a pretty girl.
