• There are multiple systems set up in
rural and urban areas of India including
Primary Health Centres, Community
Health Centres, Sub Centres, and
Government Hospitals.
• In New York, John Griscom published
The Sanitary Condition of the Labouring
Population of New York in 1848.
WHAT IS HEALTH SYSTEM IN
INDIA
• A health system comprises all organizations, institutions
and resources that are devoted to producing health
actions. The intrinsic goal of a health system is to
protect and improve the health of the people.
• Types of health system in India:
1. Central
2. State
3. District
CENTRAL
The healthcare system is organised into
primary, secondary, and tertiary levels.
At the primary level are Sub Centres and
Primary Health Centres (PHCs). At the
secondary level there are Community
Health Centres (CHCs) and smaller
Sub-District hospitals.

• Initially the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare had two Departments,
Each of these Departments was headed by the Secretary to the Government
of India:-Department of Health & Family Welfare and Department of Health
Research.
