Effective Team Leadership
• Trait theory of leadership- a person must have certain
traits to become a leader.
• Function theory of leadership- certain functions that must
be performed if a group is to be successful.
• Three-dimension theory of leadership (stylistic
approach)- describes 3 leadership styles
– Autocratic- leaders are central figures who contain a high degree
of control and power
– Democratic- leaders and followers make decisions together and
jointly determine courses of action
– Laissez-faire- leaders are not involved with the teams decision
making

• Situational Contingency Theory of Leadership
– leadership in any given situation depends on the
power of the leader, the nature of the task, and the
relationship of the leader and team members
• Situational Leadership Theory- a good leader is
flexible and can change styles when needed

• Transformational Leadership- charismatic
leaders who inspired followers to
exceptional performance, enthusiasm, and
loyalty (ex. Martin Luther King)
