Describe the observation that first led to

Wegener's hypothesis of continental drift?

The match of coastal continents South America
and Africa and how continents come to fit
together like a puzzle piece.
Summarize the evidence that supports
Wegener's hypothesis?
• Fossils- The fossils of the same plant and animals
that couldn't swim very well being found on two
different continents water ways apart.
Rock Formation- Rocks of the same age and type
found on separate continents and same mountain
ranges of a coastline found continuing on the
coastline of another continent.
Climate- The climate change patterns of continents
tell us that continents were not always in their
present location.
Compare the sea floor spreading with the
formation of mid-ocean ridges?
The scientists found that the farther the rocks
the older the rocks were,so the youngest rocks
were found near the mid-ocean ridge. This
showed that sea-floor spreading took place
because that fact that rocks were because
pushed out showed us that the sea-floor was
spreading.
Explain how scientists know that Earth's magnetic poles
have reversed many times throughout Earth's history?

The pole that tends to point north. The Earth's

physical north pole is near its magnetic south
pole ( or the "south-seeking pole",if the Earth
were a small laboratory magnet).
Identify how magnetic symmetry can be
used as evidence of sea-floor spreading?

On each side of the mid-ocean ridge is a mirror of the

striped pattern on the other side. When drawn, these
patterns show alternating bands of normal and reverse
polarity that match the geomagnetic reversal time scale,
scientists can assign ages to the sea-floor rocks. The
youngest rocks were at the center, and the older rocks
father away. The ages of the sea floor rocks are
symmetrical. The only place on the ocean-floor where
new rocks are formed are at the rift in mid-ocean ridge.
How does evidence that rocks farther from the ridge are older
than rocks closer to the ridge support the idea of spreading?

Because the evidence is showing to you how

new rocks are continuously being formed in the
rift of the ocean ridge also being that rocks are
continuously being push away across the floor
expanding which supports the idea of
spreading.
Explain how sea floor spreading provides an explanation
for how continents move over Earth's surface.

Because the sea-floor is expanding little by

little the continents must also be moving little by
little because the plates we lye on are all
connecting and touching in some way therefore
because we know the ocean floor is moving at
some point it cause the continental plates to
move also.
