Homework 2
How about a boiled potato? Other vegetables/fruits?
2-3 lines or points
Deadline : 12:30 PM on 4th August
Importance of non-equilibrium electrochemical processes

• Battery without charge • Battery at eq.

• Current, i = 0 • Current, i = 0
• Ratef = Rateb = 0 • Ratef = Rateb ≠ 0
Charging

AC-DC
converter
NON NERNSTIAN

• Ratef >> Rateb • Rateb >> Ratef

• Current, i ≠ 0 • Current, i ≠ 0
• • Tending towards eq.
Nernst equation and cold fusion : Fleishchmann-Pons experiment

Nernst equation -> Determine fugacity

Pressure of D2 on Pd surface ~ 1027 atm!!!

“The Nernst equation, applicable under equilibrium conditions, was used

to relate the overpotential in an electrochemical cell to deuterium
fugacity. If this simple, but erroneous procedure is followed, a large
overpotential does give a high deuterium fugacity.” Science, 1990

Nernst equation is applicable at equilibrium and not

when current is flowing through the cell.
