LA JOVEN

DE LA
PERLA
BARROQUE ART
IDENTIFICATION
•This painting is called "La joven de la
perla", but it is also known as "Muchacha
con turbante", it is one of the
masterpieces of the Dutch painter
Johannes Vermeer made between 1665
and 1667, of the Baroque style.
•The painting is currently in the
Mauritshuis museum in The Hague
(Netherlands).
ANALYSIS
•This work does not belong to the
genre of portraiture, but to a genre of
painting typical of the Dutch Flemish
Baroque known as the tronie ("face"
in Dutch), which was characterized by
representing portraits, usually small,
in which the protagonist shows an
exaggerated facial expression.
•The painting was painted with the
technique of oil on canvas. It represents
a dark space with lighting that comes
from the left side of the canvas. In
terms of colors, it includes blue, lemon
yellow, pearl gray, black and white. The
mouth of the girl represented, opens
slightly, as if she wanted to speak,
making the composition more realistic.
•It is a geometric composition, simple
and balanced.
•It represents the bust of a young
woman (head and shoulders). The
identity of the young woman is one of
the most debated aspects, and there
are several theories:
• Vermeer's eldest daughter, Maria.
•The daughter of the chief curator of
Vermeer
•Griet, the maid.
•The young woman's features are
Caucasian: very white skin, large clear
eyes and a fine nose, her lips are parted
and relaxed. She wears an oriental
turban on her head with the colors blue
and yellow and wears, jacket with a
shirt, and some pearl earrings.
