 Definition of Short Story

• Brief fictional prose narrative that is shorter than

a novel and that usually deals with only a few
characters.

romance e que geralmente lida com apenas alguns personagens)
 Elements and Characteristics of Short Stories
• Economy of setting (economia de cenário);
• Concise narrative (narrativa concisa);
• Omission of a complex plot (omissão de um enredo complexo);
• Character is disclosed in action and dramatic encounter but is
seldom fully developed (personagem é revelado em ação e
encontro dramático, mas raramente é desenvolvido em sua
totalidade);
• Relatively limited scope (escopo relativamente limitado);
• To provide a complete or satisfying treatment of its characters
and subject (fornece um tratamento completo ou satisfatório de
seus personagens e assunto)
 Short Story Structure...
• Exposition: Introdução (the introduction of setting, situation and
main characters);
• Complication: Complicação ou desenvolvimento (the event of
the story that introduces the conflict);
• Rising action, crisis: Conflito (the decisive moment for the
protagonist and their commitment to a course of action);
• Climax: Momento culminante da narrativa (the point of highest
interest in terms of the conflict and the point of the story with the
most action);
• Resolution: Desfecho (the point of the story when the conflict is
resolved)
• Practical Lesson: Moral da história (may not have or not).
