What is Litotes?
• Litotes is a figure of speech featuring a phrase
 that utilizes negative wording or terms to
express a positive assertion or statement. Litotes
is a common literary device, most often used in
speech, rhetoric, and nonfiction. As a figure of
speech, the meaning of litotes is not literal.
Some Examples of Litotes:

It’s a special country. She was a good dancer.

and literature to achieve different
effects and elicit different responses
from the listener/reader.

of saying something, using the
opposite of your intended
meaning to illustrate what
you're trying to say
Where to use

• Litotes is used in literature as
a way for writers to
effectively convey an idea.
The reason they are so
effective is because listeners
or readers have to pause to
interpret the actual meaning
of the phrase, making it stick
even more.
