Intonation
“Intonation” stands for the melody of language and is made up of pitches that rise and fall
while speaking.
When speaking, we need to rise the pitch of your voice at the end of a sentence to create “rising intonation.” It is
used in “Yes / No questions.”
•Are you taking care of this business project?
Examples:
•Have you recently contacted the merchants?

•Did you receive the statement last week?
•Have you ever done business with this company?
•Are you aware of the new subscriptions?
•Do you remember when it was canceled?
•Did they give you anything in writing to confirm the cancellation?
•Are you still getting the service?
•Do you still have a copy of the confirmation e-mail?
•Is there any other charge you don’t recognize?

Falling Intonation
In English, we need to low our pitch at the end of the sentence to produce a “falling intonation.”
This intonation is used for a variety of reasons:

• I need to transfer the call to the Fraud department.
• I can give you the merchant’s phone number to ask for a refund.
• Capital One just wants to make sure that you are able to recognize the transactions.
• What is your best contact phone number?.
• I am going to transfer your call to the Transactions department.
• I will place you on hold for no longer than 2 minutes.
• Where did you make the transaction?.
• I am going to remove the restrictions on your account.

Non-Final Intonation
Introductory Words: Non-final intonation is used with introductory words, such as actually,
consequently, by the way, etc.
Examples:
•Actually, I will go ahead and send you the new card in 2 business days at no charge.
•Before continuing, let me ask you some questions about this request.
