Endothermic and Exothermic Calculations

Objective:
to carry out calculations using bond
energies to work out the enthalpy change

Draw reaction pathway diagrams for the following

reactions:
1. A + B  AB ∆H = -132
2. AB  A + B ∆H = 132
Δ H = ENERGY IN -ENERGY OUT
Energy in = energy needed to break all the bonds in the reactants

Energy out = energy released from making the bonds in the

products

Δ H = -X = exothermic
Δ H = +X = endothermic
Endothermic and exothermic reactions

C2H6(g) → C2H4(g) + H2(g)

Using the information above:

1. Calculate the enthalpy change
2. State whether the reaction is endothermic or
exothermic
3. Draw a reaction pathway diagram
Endothermic and exothermic reactions
CH4(g) + 2O2(g) → CO2(g) + 2H2O(g)

Using the information above:

1. Balance the equation
2. Calculate the enthalpy change
3. State whether the reaction is endothermic or
exothermic
4. Draw a reaction pathway diagram
Endothermic and exothermic reactions

2H2(g) + O2(g) → 2H2O(g)

Using the information above:

1. Balance the equation
2. Calculate the enthalpy change
3. State whether the reaction is endothermic or
exothermic
4. Draw a reaction pathway diagram
Using the information above:
1. Calculate the enthalpy change
2. State whether the reaction is endothermic or
exothermic
3. Draw a reaction pathway diagram
Hydrogen is used as a fuel. The equation for its combustion is
2H2 + O2 → 2H2O
(a) Explain, in terms of the energy changes involved in breaking and
making bonds, why this reaction gives out heat.
(3)

breaking bonds absorbs energy /endothermic

making bonds releases energy/exothermic

more energy released than absorbed

Lesson Objectives revisited:

• 3.1 know that chemical reactions in which heat energy is given out are
described as exothermic, and those in which heat energy is taken in are
described as endothermic (Level 5)

• 3.5C draw and explain energy level diagrams to represent exothermic

and endothermic reactions (Level 6)

• 3.6C know that bond-breaking is an endothermic process and that

bond-making is an exothermic process (Level 7/8)

• 3.7C use bond energies to calculate the enthalpy change during a

chemical reaction (Level 9)
