TRANSPORTATION Transportation presents a major consideration in the design of the elements and how they come together in the overall structure. The structure should be broken down so that they must be shipped limits size of the individual panels, modules or components. The elements should be unloaded with out delay in the construction site in a scheduled manner and the priority of sets of elements for delivery must be specified. Elements transported from manufacturers to the construction site by means of drop trucks, truck trailers, panel carrier trucks, heavy duty trailers pulled by prime mover and railroad platforms. The total weight of the load transported should not exceed 15% and should not be less then 90% of the vehicle capacity when the elements are transported in horizontal direction. The load must be in the range of 60 to 90% of the vehicle capacity in vertical direction. The houses having two floorings or two ceilings panels construction when one flooring is transported the trailer’s idle time at the construction is completely eliminated since the trailer is unloaded as soon as it arrives within the crane radius, the elements is transferred to the place of erection and the trailer starts back to the plant. HEAVY DUTY TRUCKS The block carrier is used to transfer block and short panels loaded across the trailer’s longitudinal axis.
The choices of vehicles for elements transportation depends on the
elements dimensions. Smaller elements are transported on standard drop side trucks. Larger size elements are transported on pole carriage or heavy duty trailers. • Two story columns and beam above span 5m in length are transported through pole trailers or semitrailers. The pole trailer is used for good hard surface road where as the semitrailers rides over any road. • It has a capacity of carrying load of 5 to 10 tons . The columns are arranged in two layers on pillow blocks bolted to the trailer frame using special bolt clamps and a wooden spacer to separate the columns horizontally. Wall and partition panels are transported on special trailers or trucks equipped with cassettes. They are of two types. Semi enclosed cassette – single and double. Open cassette – vertical and inclined. CASSETTE Transportation of two story column Large size wall panels and rolled gypsum concrete partition panels are transported on multi purpose semitrailers of 12 tons capacity equipped with semi enclosed cassettes.
Wall and partition panels can travel in slightly
inclined position on the truss type panel carriers of 18-tons capacity. Frameless panel carrier
