Flow

Calculation

Introduction

• Calculation of flow rate based on Bernoulli principle

• As a fluid passes through a restriction, it accelerates and
pressure drops
• The DP is measured and using this the following can be
calculated:
• Volumetric flow, mass flow and velocity

Where Q is volumetric flow, W is mass flow

D is density of liquid, h is differential pressure, A is area
And K is discharge coefficient
Calculating Flow from DP and Line Size

PI 900 Kpa
Q = ???

DN 100

Q = KAV
Where Q is Volumetric flow in M^3/S
A is Area of pipe in M^2
K is constant depending on exit shape

2 P
V K

A = r^2
= 0.007853981 m^2

Therefore Q = K x 0.007853981 x 42.426

Using K of 1, = 0.3331 m3/sec
Or 20 m3/min
Calculating Line size from DP and Flow

PI 900 Kpa
Q = 1330 L/min

DN = ???

Q = KAV
Where Q is Volumetric flow in M^3/S
A is Area of pipe in M^2
K is constant depending on exit shape

A = Q/KV
= 0.022166/42.426
= 0.000522478

Therefore Diameter of pipe = 25.8 mm
