By JAYAMARY VARGHESE STOPPING BY THE WOODS ON A SNOWY EVENING By ROBERT FROST THE WOODS ARE LOVELY DARK AND DEEP
BUT I HAVE PROMISES TO KEEP
AND MILES TO GO BEFORE I SLEEP
AND MILES TO GO BEFORE I SLEEP
EXPLANATION This poem is one of his best known works, and explores the theme of obligations versus man’s desire for peace of mind. This stanza can be interpreted in many ways. Though he enjoys the beauty of the woods ,he must keep going, because he has things to do and long distance to cover until he is able to sleep. The important thing here is that the poet repeats the last line to make an emphasis and attract the attention of the readers. In the last two lines ,lies the allegorical interpretation. Here ‘sleep’ may refer to death, and ‘promises’ may refer to our duties. RHYMING SCHEME
