INTRODUCTION Bearing capacity is the maximum soil capacity to resist the load.

. There are two major type of failure, as follows : Shear Failure, the shear stress is exceed the soil shear strength. Terzaghi call this failure stability problem. Settlement Failure, the normal stress induced the soil to settle excessively. Terzaghi call this failure elasticity problem.

BEARING CAPACITY There are two types of bearing capacity, as follows : * Ultimate Bearing Capacity, maximum bearing capacity based on the geotechnical analysis result. qult = ultimate bearing capacity

* Allowable Bearing Capacity, design bearing capacity based on the several factors such type of soil, type of foundation, risk etc. qa= qult/ FS where : qa = allowable bearing capacity qult = ultimate bearing capacity FS = factor of safety

Calculation
BASED ON SHEAR CRITERIA (For general shear)
As per clause 5.1.2.4 of IS:6403 W=0.5 As per clause 5.1.2.1of IS:6403 (table 2) Sc=Sq=S = 1 N = tan(45+ /2)=tan59=1.66 From table 1of IS:6403-1981 for Nq=15.304 and N =17.792 =28

As per clause 5.1.2.2 of IS: 6403 The depth factor are dq = d = 1 + 0.1 N Df/B for > 10 dq = d =1+0.1*1.66*1/5=2.106
q = Effective surcharge at the base level of foundation in kg/cm2

q=(1.74*1.0)/10 =0.174 kg/cm2

For local shear

' = tan1 (0.67 tan ) = tan1 (0.67 tan 28)=19.6

For ' = 19.6as per IS:6403-1981, clause 5.1.1 table-1
