to fit into one of the following categories:

▰ Executives—Those who are funding the product


▰ Experts—Those who are coming up with ideas
about the product
▰ Technicians—Those who are building the product
▰ Non-specialists—The end-user

WHAT IS AUDIENCE ANALYSIS?

Investigate and reasoning process by which


a writer identifies his or her target audience
and the things that the audience values, with
respect to their audience contexts.

THERE ARE THREE TYPES OF AUDIENCE:

PRIMARY AUDIENCE
 The actual “target” is the person or people you hope to influence
with your writing.
SECONDARY AUDIENCE
 Other stakeholders to whom the writing is not addressed but who
may be influenced by it or asked to read it by the primary
audience.
TERTIARY AUDIENCE
 Readers who may come across and read your writing but who are
not actually influenced by its content

WHAT IS PERSUASION OR PERSUASIVE IN
TECHNICAL WRITING

 Persuasive technical writing is a form of technical


thought leadership where the author is attempting to
persuade their reader to agree with them on some topic.
Typically, the author wants the audience to see the same
problem or solution they do. 20

Ethos

▰ By appealing to credibility, writers make


their claims more believable. The writer
builds on his or her ethos by writing with
clarity. The writer will be more credible if
there are no errors in the writing, as well as
no errors in the subject matter

Logos

▰ By appealing to logic, writers persuade. A


successful appeal to logos requires tangible
evidence, e.g., a quote from a reliable
source. The writer appeals to the rationality
of the audience.

Pathos

▰ By appealing to emotions, writers persuade.


This is possibly the most important of the
appeals. If you judge a mood or correctly
address feelings about the subject, you can
win over an audience.
