INTRODUCTION
Inflation is an increase in the level of prices of the goods and
services that a household buy. The COVID-19 Pandemic, in the
opening of countries and the economy, left a huge scar that is
affecting every Filipino and is felt in the whole world.

Another problem that still hasn’t been resolved is the proper
segregation of our garbage and trash. Certain materials that are
not used should not end up in landfills. It increases the number of
materials in landfills when they can be recycled into something
usable.

PRELIMINARY
RESEARCH
11

The construction industry has experienced a troubled recovery from the pandemic.
Trade tariffs, congested logistic routes, labor shortages, and even climate change is
hindering a recovery in the construction sector. The most obvious legacies of the
lockdown are the shortages of construction materials and unprecedented price hikes.

Volatility is synonymous with risk, and rising material prices are dominating the
conversations in the construction industry right now. Material costs have grown by
27.8% since May 2020, according to the AGC Construction Inflation Alert, but bid
prices have only accounted for 5.2% of the increase. According to some reports, it is
predicted that towards the end of 2022, material supply constraints and commodity
price increases, will add from 2% to 4% to total project costs. Plus, a further 1% to
3% could be added if we include logistics and transportation.
12

According to PSA in their Construction Materials Retail Price Index in the NCR, the
upward trend was due mainly to the higher annual increase in the index for the
tinsmithry materials at 9.4% in June from 8.3% in the previous month. This was
later followed by the index for plumbing materials which posted an annual
increment of 8.5% in June from 7.9% in May. The painting materials and Related
components index climbed to 4.6% in June from 4.1% in May. Miscellaneous
construction materials were up to 10.6% in June from 10.2% in the previous month.

Due to the increasing inflation in the Philippines and the effects of the COVID -19
Pandemic, increasing necessities and material costs are out of your control.
Typically, the only solution that contractors have at their disposal is to find better
ways to manage materials and waste. By tightening the belt on construction waste
and inefficiencies, construction managers can better balance their budget for
materials.

How can we innovatively use disposable materials in decreasing
the cost of construction materials?
