Flood Destruction

In Pakistan
What is a Flood?
• Floods have large social consequences for communities and individuals.
• Flood is an overflow of water on usually dry land. During heavy rainfall,
flooding can happen when ocean waves arrive on land.
• Flooding may occur as an overflow of water from water bodies, such as a
river, lake, or ocean, in which the water overtops or breaks levees, resulting in
some of that water escaping its usual boundaries, or it may occur due to an
accumulation of rainwater on saturated ground in an areal flood.
What are its Effects?
• As most people are well aware, the immediate impacts of flooding
include loss of human life, damage to property, destruction of crops, loss of
livestock, and deterioration of health conditions owing to waterborne diseases.
• Damage to infrastructure also causes long-term impacts, such as disruptions to
clean water and electricity, transport, communication, education and health
care.

Pakistan
• The number of damaged and destroyed houses now exceeds 2 million. Around
23,900 schools, 1,460 health facilities and 13,000 km of roads have also
reportedly been damaged. More than 5,000 schools are being used as
temporary relief camps.
• The widespread destruction of Pakistan's agriculture and livestock will trigger
additional severe food shortages. The flooding has drowned 900,000 livestock
and obliterated 80 to 90 percent of crops and over 4 million acres of farmland.
