Mark Scheme

The word stalk means to follow or pursue something that you are trying to
capture, or to go in search of prey, in particular by moving slowly and quietly.

It’s as if the tree fellers are pursuing or capturing the trees as their prey. It makes
them seem like hunters.

Your answer might not match the example answer exactly, but should convey
the same idea.
14. Circle the word that is closest in meaning to ‘doffed’. 1

out its meaning.
15. What evidence is there in the poem that chopping the tree 2
is a difficult task? marks

This question refers to the whole poem, not just one particular area.

It is worth 2 marks, so try to make 2 separate points.

Think carefully about the whole poem. What

clues are there about the task being difficult?
Mark Scheme
Award 2 marks for references to any 2 of the points indicated.

Answers may include:

•Requires tools such as axes, saws and rope.
•Actions such as ‘swing axes’, ‘chop away’.
•Tug the rope then step back to pull some more – doesn’t come down easily.
•Takes nearly two hours / long staying powers indicating resistance.
•Several separate stages to complete – chopping, sawing, pulling.

Mark Scheme
Award one mark for an answer indicating the force of the tree crashing to the
ground, causing other trees to shake.

E.g. The tree crashes to the ground with great force, probably shaking the ground
as it lands. This causes the other trees – or its neighbours – to shake too.
