Gerunds and infinitives

introduction
• Gerunds are: verbs+ -ing.
• All verbs ( actions and non-action verbs ) can
be used in the gerund form to form a type of
nouns.
• Gerunds have 3 positions in a sentence:
• 1- subject
• 2- object
• 3- object of preposition
• Infinitive are: to + infinitive
• They are categorized into three categories:
1- verbs followed directly by the infinitive.
Ex: I hope to travel to Spain.
2- verbs followed by object +infinitive
Ex: I advised them to study hard
3- verbs followed by either the infinitive OR object +infinitive
Ex: I want to leave
I want you to leave
• Note:
• You can’t split between the verb and its
infinitive.
Ex: I immediately wanted to leave. (True)
BUT NOT:
I wanted to immediately leave. ( False)
