"BACKGROUND OF THE RESEARCH"
Vocabulary is an important part in a language and also for all the people to interact each other. Vocabulary can be

formed of four basic language skills. Vocabulary will help students to succeed in using the language. The students are

helped to understand how words work in written and spoken forms.

80% of X Social 3 students SMAN 2 Nganjuk have the ability to mastery of vocabulary under the Minimum

Completeness Criteria. The problem is the students cannot understand the content of the text because they get difficulties

on understanding new vocabulary and also got difficulities in constucting their idea in reading especialy in understanding

most of vocabulary in a text related to the "Descriptive text".

Teaching English needs some strategy that make the students’ interest and easy to understand. One of strategy to

improve student vocabulary through Vocabulary Self-Collection Strategy (VSS). In this case, the writer emphasis the way

to over came the problems that the students’ feel when studying vocabulary in learning English in X Social Science class

of SMAN 2 Nganjuk.

In this study, the researcher used a quantitative method in


which the design is a quasi-experimental research.

To prove the effectiveness of using Vocabulary Self-


Collection as a medium for teaching English especially
reading, the writer will use experimentals group as an
approach in conducting research.
