MODULE 7

PERIMETER
Perimeter of a two-dimensional shape refers
to the distance around the shape. Think of
wrapping tightly a string around a
rectangular board. The length of the string
would be the perimeter of the rectangular
board. To make it easier to remember, think
“peRIMeter” which has the word RIM in it
which denotes the edge of an object.
The word perimeter is made up of two
Greek words – “peri” which means around
and “metron” which means measure. To get
the perimeter of any figure or polygon, just
add up all the lengths of the sides. Make
sure that the lengths are measured in the
same units. Examples of the units of
measures are inches, centimeters, meters or
feet.
AREA
Geometrically, area is defined as the space occupied
by a flat shape or the surface of the object. It is the
number of unit squares that cover the surface of a
closed figure. Simply, area is the whole of the inside.
It is measured in square units such as square
centimeter, square meter, square inches, square feet,
etc. When finding the area of a polygon, you count
how many squares of a certain size will cover the
region inside the polygon.
FORMULAS FOR AREA AND PERIMETER
OF GEOMETRIC FIGURES
Perimeter and area are fundamental formulas in
mathematics. They are used to quantify physical
space. Basic knowledge of perimeter and area can
be applied practically on a daily basis because it is
needed by people in general. With understanding on
how much space you have and learn how to fit
shapes together will surely help you remodel a
workspace, or even assemble a computer system.
