“Preparing for the Future
Digitized Health”

Future Health and

the Central Role
of Biosensor
Prof Bhisma Murti
Masters Program of Public Health, Graduate
School, Universitas Sebelas Maret
Health Care System
in the Future will be
Different from Today..
By 2040, health care as we
know it today will no longer exist.
There will be a fundamental shift in focus
from “HEALTH CARE” TO “HEALTH.” As
Michael Grossman stated it 50 years
ago (1972), what people actually
demand is HEALTH rather than
demand for HEALTH CARE per se.
(Grossman, 1972; Deloitte, 2019)
Extended Digital
Transformation:
from E-Commerce
to E-Health
People have grown accustomed
with digital transformation in
SEAMLESS E-COMMERCE
AND MOBILITY.
BY THE SAME TOKEN,
digital transformation will drive
HUGE CHANGE IN HEALTH
CARE SYSTEM.
Future Consumer-Driven
Digitized Healthcare
Unlike today, healthcare will be
ORGANIZED AROUND THE
PEOPLE, rather than around the
INSTITUTIONS that drive our
existing health care system.
(Deloitte, 2019; Manber, 2022;
Morgan, 2022)
Customer-centric, Personalized
Care
Healthcare ISN’T A ONE-SIZE-
FITS-ALL APPROACH. Because how
a disease or condition manifests itself
in one person could be very different
from how it looks in another patient.
Each patient may have different
symptoms and require different
approaches to treatment to create
their healthiest outcome.
Disease Prevention and
Proactive Treatment
Disease will never be completely eliminated.

However, through the science

breakthrough and digitized technology, we will be
able TO IDENTIFY IT EARLIER, INTERVENE
PROACTIVELY, AND BETTER UNDERSTAND
DISEASE PROGRESSION TO HELP PEOPLE
MORE EFFECTIVELY AND ACTIVELY
MAINTAIN THEIR WELL-BEING.
(Deloitte, 2019; Morgan, 2022)
Personalized Understanding of Individual
Health and Risk Factors
PREVENTION AND EARLY DIAGNOSES OF
DISEASES WILL BE CENTRAL TO THE FUTURE OF
HEALTH. The future of healthcare is MORE ABOUT
PREVENTING DISEASE THAN TREATING IT.

Doctors will focus on PREVENTATIVE MEASURES

THAT CAN PROACTIVELY ADDRESS ISSUES instead of
waiting to perform risky or emergency procedures. At the
heart of that is A PERSONALIZED UNDERSTANDING
OF EACH INDIVIDUAL AND THEIR RISK FACTORS
(Deloitte, 2019; Morgan, 2022).
Digital Transformation and
Health Outcomes
Digital transformation of health care can be
disruptive. However, it has proven potential
TO ENHANCE HEALTH OUTCOMES BY
IMPROVING MEDICAL DIAGNOSIS, DATA-
BASED TREATMENT DECISIONS, SELF-
MANAGEMENT OF CARE AND PERSON-
CENTERED CARE as well as creating MORE
EVIDENCE-BASED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS
AND COMPETENCE for professionals to
support health care (WHO, 2021).
Does Digital Technology
Promote Health Equity?
Digital health will be valued and adopted
if it is accessible and supports equitable
and universal access to quality health
services (WHO, 2021)
Yes. Digital transformation has the
potential TO EMPOWER AND FOSTER
DISADVANTAGED COMMUNITIES including
those living in remote areas for their health
need fulfillment (Noruwana et al., 2018).
Nevertheless, Human
Connection is Essential to
True Personalized and
Patient-Centricity
Despite the positive digitized health
care, the need for AUTHENTIC AND
EMPATHETIC HUMAN CONNECTION
in health creation should not be lost.
Digital tools should be paired with the
human touch to DRIVE ENGAGEMENT
AND BETTER OUTCOMES
(Manber, 2022)
Four Types of Key
Players in the Future Health
Ecosystem for Well-being and
Care Delivery
1. Health product developer
2. Consumer-centric health community
3. Specialty care provider
4. Localized health hub
1 Health Product
Developer

Health product developers will power

the consumer health ecosystem by
DEVELOPING AND MANUFACTURING
WELLNESS AND CARE PRODUCTS-
FROM APPLICATIONS TO DRUGS
AND DEVICES.
(Deloitte, 2019)
2
Consumer-Centric
Health Community
CONSUMER-CENTRIC HEALTH
PLAYERS (ALLIED HEALTH
PROFESSIONALS) will provide:
1.Virtual, personalized wellness
and care to consumers
2.Leverage community to
encourage BEHAVIOR CHANGE
3.Drive consumer and caregiver
HEALTH EDUCATION.
(Deloitte, 2019)
3
Specialty Care Provider
There will be the need for
specialty care providers and
highly specialized facilities where
those patients can receive care.
Specialty care operators will
provide essential specialty care and
interventions when in-home wellness
and care efforts are insufficient.
(Deloitte, 2019)
4
Localized
Health Hub
While there will be some
specialty care, MOST HEALTH CARE
WILL LIKELY BE DELIVERED IN
LOCALIZED HEALTH HUBS.
Localized health hubs will serve as
centers for education, prevention, and
treatment in a retail setting.
Local hubs will connect consumers to virtual,
home, and auxiliary wellness providers.
(Deloitte, 2019)
Portable Information and
Wearable Biosensor
People have grown familiar with seamless
digital transformation in e-commerce and
mobility. Likewise, people will likely demand
that their HEALTH INFORMATION BE
SEAMLESS AND PORTABLE (Deloitte,
2019; Manber, 2022).
According to Jacob (2022) it prompts
the development of wearable biosensors
now widely available in the market in
developed countries like Australia.
The Central Role of
Biosensor
BIOSENSOR will have the central
role in the health of the people
Many medical technology companies
are already beginning to incorporate
ALWAYS-ON BIOSENSORS AND
SOFTWARE INTO DEVICES THAT
CAN GENERATE, GATHER, AND
SHARE DATA.
What is Biosensor?
A BIOSENSOR is AN ANALYTICAL
DEVICE which uses a living
organism or biological molecules so
called as BIORECEPTOR (e.g. DNA,
enzymes, or antibodies), to DETECT
AND RECOGNIZE THE PRESENCE
OF AN ANALYTE (BIOMARKER)
(Turner, 2013; Bhalla et al.,
2016; Singh et al., 2020).
Biosensors and Disease
Detection
Biosensors are a powerful tool for
EARLY STAGE DISEASE DETECTION
AND TREATMENT IN CLINICAL SETTINGS.
For example, it CAN MONITOR REAL-TIME
BIOLOGICAL SIGNALS, SUCH AS THE RELEASE
OF PROTEINS OR ANTIBODIES in response to
TISSUE DAMAGE, MUSCULAR DYSTROPHY,
CARDIAC INFARCTION, INFLAMMATORY
EVENTS OR INFECTIONS.

Advantages
of Biosensors
The advantages of biosensors over
lab based equipment are as follows:

1.Small size
2.Low cost
3.Quick results
4.Very easy to use
Wearable Biosensors
Wearable biosensors (WBSs) are
portable electronic devices that
integrate sensors into/or with the
human body in the forms of tattoos,
gloves, clothing, and implants,
realizing IN VIVO SENSING, data
recording and calculation using mobile or
portable devices (Sharma et al., 2021).
What is A Good Wearable
Biosensor?
A good wearable biosensors (WBSs)
provides CONTINUOUS, REAL-TIME
PHYSIOLOGICAL INFORMATION VIA
DYNAMIC, NONINVASIVE, AND NON-
IRRITATING MEASUREMENTS OF
BIOCHEMICAL MARKERS IN BIOFLUIDS,
such as SWEAT, TEARS, SALIVA AND
INTERSTITIAL FLUID (Kim et al., 2019;
Sharma, 2021; Ye et al., 2022).
